About Northern Valley Regional High School District
Northern Valley Regional begins at grade nine. Students from seven municipalities complete the earlier grades in separately governed local districts, then enter one of two regional high schools according to their home community. Northern Valley at Demarest serves Closter, Demarest, and Haworth. Northern Valley at Old Tappan serves Harrington Park, Northvale, Norwood, and Old Tappan.
The two high schools are residence-based destinations within one regional district, not interchangeable campuses. The transition after eighth grade changes the board, registration system, calendar, transportation contacts, course selection process, and student services for all seven communities. A family should identify the municipality first; the regional high-school assignment follows from that map.
Northern Valley also operates regional special-education programs, including the Valley Program and other specialized settings. Those programs should not be mistaken for a third home high school. They use separate placement processes and serve a different function from the routine Demarest–Old Tappan attendance division.
