About Montclair Public Schools
Montclair does not use a conventional neighborhood-school assignment system for its seven elementary and three middle schools. The district’s magnet structure grew from desegregation requirements and treats the entire township as the neighborhood for every magnet school. Families rank school preferences, while the district makes placements through a zone-based process designed to balance enrollment and preserve the system’s diversity goals.
That arrangement is not unrestricted school choice. A home address establishes the applicable zone and priority rules, but it does not guarantee the closest building or a family’s first-ranked school. Themes help distinguish the magnets, yet placement still depends on the district’s controlled assignment process and available capacity.
The structure changes again at the high-school level, where students come together at Montclair High School. The crucial family task occurs earlier: submit the required preferences, understand the zone rules, and wait for the official placement rather than assuming that a nearby elementary or middle school is automatic. Montclair’s feeder map is produced by a managed magnet assignment system, not by ordinary neighborhood boundaries.
