About Paterson Public School District
Paterson is moving through a phased transition from several former choice-school models toward neighborhood elementary assignments and dedicated grades 6–8 middle-school cohorts. Alexander Hamilton Academy, Renaissance One, Norman S. Weir, and Young Men’s Leadership Academy have left the former choice-school structure, and affected students return to their designated neighborhood schools.
Implementation is occurring building by building. Some campuses are returning to elementary grade spans, while School 21 is part of the 6–8 middle-school model. Current home-school notices and transition materials should take priority over directories that still display the former choice routes.
High-school entry remains a separate selection cycle. Central-registration materials direct eighth graders and new high-school entrants through school-choice and pathway procedures, so Paterson combines increasingly neighborhood-based earlier grades with application and program decisions at the high-school boundary.
